NEWS AND UPDATES FROM THE WHOLE GRITTY CITY TEAM

September 6th, 2012

It's been nearly five years since we first walked into a New Orleans high school band room and started filming The Whole Gritty City.

We've been heartened and moved by encouragement and support from many of you.  Our Kickstarter campaign last year made a crucial difference.  We are now very close to a final edit of the film.

Recently we got a reaction to a nearly-finished version of the film from David Simon, creator of The Wire and Treme.

"Gritty City is glorious.  Alternately heartbreaking and joyous, one instant to the next.  It is also not bombastic in the way that a lot of stuff about NO tends to be.  It is human-scale.  I love it."

That response means a lot to us.

But we're not quite finished yet.  We are determined to complete The Whole Gritty City by the end of this fall, and to release it early next year, at festivals and theaters (with live music at some screenings!), then on the internet, DVD, at group outreach screenings, and on TV.

Now it's come down to raising the final funding we need to finish post production, including sound mixing, and to pay for legal and insurance costs.

At the center of that effort will be an all-new Kickstarter campaign.  We'll launch it Monday, September 10th, and it will run for a month.  Please check it out - we'll send an announcement when it starts - and please consider being a backer.  Making a contribution will get us to the finish line, and will get you rewards ranging from photo prints and video downloads to premiere tickets and more.

Even if you can't contribute money, you can help contribute to the campaign's success by spreading the word to others who might want to know about The Whole Gritty City.  That could mean going on Facebook and Twitter and linking to our new Kickstarter page, and mentioning it in emails and discussions with friends, family and colleagues.

If we fall short of our Kickstarter goal we won't get any of the money pledged - that's just how Kickstarter works.  If we do reach our goal we'll have enough funding to finish the film and launch it at festivals.  If we go beyond our goal, we'll get a head start on funding our theatrical distribution and outreach campaigns.

We're concentrating now on finishing and releasing the film.  But once it's out there we are committed to partnering with different groups to use the film to promote discussion and positive change.  We're aiming to partner with organizations concerned with music and arts education, mentorship, juvenile justice and violence prevention to bring our message of the power of music and mentorship to broader audiences.  Send us an email to find out more or to suggest a group we should partner with!

We will begin posting updates here regularly.  Please spread the word about the film and the new Kickstarter to anyone you think might be interested.  Also, just "liking" our Facebook page and following us on Twitter (@wholegrittycity) can really mean a lot as well.  Backers and grant providers like to see high numbers of fans on our social media pages, so please help us to spread the word!

You have our profound and heartfelt thanks for the interest you've shown in The Whole Gritty City.  If you have any questions about the film or our Kickstarter campaigns, suggestions about new Kickstarter rewards, or ideas about potential partners, please email us at info@TheWholeGrittyCity.com.

Stay tuned for more news soon!
